How to Start a Private School: 8-Step Guide

BySchool Choice USA Editorial Team··Editorial Policy

A comprehensive roadmap for church leaders, educators, and entrepreneurs looking to open a private or Christian school — from incorporation to ESA registration and first-year enrollment.

1Define Your Mission & Model

Clarify your educational philosophy, target grade levels, faith-based or secular orientation, and enrollment capacity. Research your local market to understand demand and competition. Develop a mission statement that will guide all subsequent decisions.

2Form a Legal Entity

Register as a nonprofit (501(c)(3)) or for-profit corporation with your state. A 501(c)(3) designation allows tax-deductible donations and access to most SGO scholarship programs. Consult an education attorney for your state's specific requirements.

3Obtain State Licensing

Every state has different requirements for private school operation. Most require registration with the state department of education, background checks for staff, facility inspections, and minimum curriculum standards. Some states require accreditation.

4Pursue Accreditation

Accreditation by a recognized agency (ACSI, AACS, AdvancED/Cognia, SACS) is critical for ESA eligibility. Most state ESA programs require schools to be accredited to receive funds. Start the accreditation process early — it typically takes 1-3 years.

5Secure a Facility

Your facility must meet local zoning, fire safety, ADA accessibility, and health department requirements. Many new schools start in church buildings, community centers, or shared spaces to reduce initial costs. Plan for 35-50 sq ft per student.

6Develop Curriculum & Hire Staff

Select curriculum aligned with your mission and state requirements. Hire qualified teachers — many states require private school teachers to have at minimum a bachelor's degree. Consider teacher certification requirements for ESA program participation.

7Register for ESA & SGO Programs

Once accredited, register your school with your state's ESA program to accept ESA-funded students. Also register with relevant SGOs so scholarship recipients can attend. Being ESA-approved dramatically increases enrollment potential.

8Launch Marketing & Enrollment

List your school on School Choice USA to reach ESA-eligible families. Create a website, hold open houses, and connect with local churches and homeschool groups. Emphasize your ESA acceptance and any SGO scholarship partnerships.
