Current count: 39 active programs across 26 states.
Includes 39 programs across 26 states (15 ESA, 11 voucher, 13 tax credit) as of February 2026. Source: EdChoice 2026 ABCs of School Choice.
A program is counted as "active" if families can currently apply for and receive funding, even if the program is under legal challenge (e.g., Ohio EdChoice, Arkansas LEARNS Act ESA). Programs that have been enacted but not yet funded or accepting applications are not counted.
When a page displays a "Last Verified" date, it means a member of our editorial team checked the page content against current primary sources on that date. This includes verifying award amounts, eligibility rules, application deadlines, and program URLs against the administering agency's official website.
Content marked as "Reviewed" has been checked for factual accuracy, clarity, and completeness by a second team member who did not write the original content. All state program guides undergo this dual-review process before publication.
School listings are sourced from NCES data and enhanced with information from school websites, accreditation databases, and school-submitted updates. "ESA Accepted" status is verified through state program participation lists when available, or through direct confirmation from the school.
We take accuracy seriously. If you find an error on our site, we want to know about it.
